Jura Crest Trail
Seven days trekking adventure in the heart of the Jura
The Jura Crest Trail is the oldest national long-distance trail in Switzerland. Starting at Zurich and ending in Nyon- just before Geneva- it offers 320 km treks along the Swiss Jura ridges since 1905.
It was in our bucket list to complete part of it from Couvet (Les Rochats) to Nyon with my friends for a long time, and, as usual, I had the pleasure to organize this exciting travel experience.
Due to unfavourable circumstances we had to postpone the trip several times. And, when we finally stepped into the path of Jura crest trail, I had to adjust the program to the extreme weather conditions (we had everything: 25 degrees with sun, rain, snow, milk mist and strong wind).
Nevertheless, it was a fantastic adventure, had a great time and I have very fond memories of the Jura Crest Trail.
Our Jura Crest Trail adventure in a nutshell
- In total we hiked 127km with 5483m ascend and 5643m descend.
- We reduced our trip by 5.8km and 300m elevation both ways due to the adjustment because of the bad weather.
- Our average speed was 3.2km/h.
- We walked in a total of 40.41 hours, that is an average of 5.77 hours per day.
- Lowest point of the journey was Bonmont with 606m, the highest point was the Mont Tendre with 1679m.
- The highest temperature was 24C, the coldest was 0C.
- The biggest climb was 750m to the Dent de Vaullion on the 4th day.
- The biggest descend was 1119m on the last day.
- We have climbed 6 peaks.
- We don`t have official statistics for the rain, based on our measure it was more than enough. It rained 5 days.
- I have eaten more cheese during the week than I normally consume during a month. 😊
- We used 1.5 tubes of arnica cream and plenty of plasters during our trip.
You can read our adventure in more details in my blog (Jura Crest trail).
Some thoughts about the Jura Crest Trail
- Absolutely worth the effort, it is a beautiful and diverse trek!
- Ideal for spring and autumn; as majority of the trail is exposed to the sun summer might be too hot.
- Before May the trail might be too snowy to complete.
- There aren`t many accommodation options along the way, it is important to plan the trip in advance.
- Hardcores can wild camping, however there is very limited possibility to get water.
- A medium fitness level is enough to complete.
- There are few parts of the Jura Crest Trail what are technically difficult, however you can choose alternative routes to avoid them.
- Not recommended for people with vertigo.
- Proper equipment is essential, especially good hiking boots, wind stopper and raingear.
- It was a fantastic adventure, had a great time and collected plenty of memories! However, I must admit that I am a bit exhausted and will have a lazy weekend to recover.
- On the way home I was debating with myself if I want to have shower or to eat first.

Discovery weekend in the heart of Jungfrau
Experience of the beauty and the diversity of the Swiss Alps
Surrounded by gorgeous peaks and beautiful mountain panoramas, we spent a relaxing and fun weekend in the Swiss Alps
The variety of hikes, delicious traditional mountain dishes and the coziness and warmth of the Swiss chalet atmosphere guaranteed to have a joyful Alpine adventure.
With the main goal of the weekend to complete the spectacular but rather challenging mountain hike from Schynige Platte to First, we have arrived at the region Friday afternoon after work with energy buzzing in us. After gathering the entire group, we discovered the charming little village we stayed for the night and spent the evening getting to know each other better over a savory dinner in a cozy mountain restaurant.
The second day started early, as we took the mountain train to the starting point of our fantastic day trip (16 km, 830 m ascend, 640 m descend, 6-7h), to Schynige Platte. Already at the summit station we stopped to admire the diverse flora of the Matten and the Alpine Garden.
From there the path lead us along the wild karstic landscape in the Güw area and with magnificent view to the shimmering Lake Sägistalsee.
We stopped in the Männdlenen mountain lodge, where we quenched our hunger with local mountain dishes before continued our journey in the Swiss Alps.
Before we reached one of the main attractions of our trip, the Faulhorn, we had another, unexpected stop in the mountainside, as we met a big bunch of cows descending from the Swiss Alps to the urban area for winter.
Faulhorn offers a magnificent panoramic view. You can see Lake Brienz on one side and the glorious Jungfrau massif on the other.
In the 19th century, the Faulhorn was described as a "ladies' peak" because there are no significant mountaineering skills required to climb it. However, reaching the summit indeed does require a good level of physical fitness. '
According to the myths the 'faul' in the name of the summit refers to the English world 'Lazy', but the truth is, that Faul' or 'ful' is the term used to describe the loose layers of clay and slate from which the mountain is made.
After marveling at the scenic view of surrounding mountain peaks, we continued our journey and soon arrived at the idyllic alpine lake of Bachalpsee. From there we had only a nice stroll ahead of us to arrive to the end point of our trip, to First, where we took the gondola to descend to the valley.
After such a long and challenging day, the evening was much calmer than the previous day and after a quick dinner everyone retired to sleep.
The third day we participated in the celebration of `desalpe`, in the event the local welcome back the cows from the mountains for the winter period.
After mingling with local and other travelers, tasting different local delicacies and participating some funny games (my friend gained 2nd place in throwing logs!), we slowly arrived at the end of our travel experience and left with fond memories of the Swiss Alps.

Experience of the Winter magic in the Swiss Alps
This travel experience was organized for a couple of friends who were visiting Switzerland for a short period of time and wished for a memorable winter holiday experience in the Swiss Alps.
Surrounded by snowy peaks and beautiful mountain panoramas in the spectacular Jungfrau area, they had immersed themselves into the winter spirit and discovered how winter feels like in the Swiss Alps.
Enjoying a range of traditional winter activities, trying delicious traditional mountain dishes and savoring the coziness and warmth of the Swiss chalet atmosphere, they had a magical Alpine weekend adventure.
The travel experience
After arriving to Switzerland and travelling to Jungfrau, the day was almost gone. Therefore, the program was short and simple but nevertheless heartwarming. They had a delicious dinner in a traditional mountain restaurant, wondered around in the fairytale village and enjoyed its warm atmosphere, breathed -in the fresh air and relaxed with the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding Alps before the day ended.
The second day was all about snow and enjoying the winter in the Swiss Alps. So, they picked up their sledges in the morning and discovered the all the slopes of the region (there are plenty!) throughout the day. They even went for the longest sledge ride in the world, however they had to climb up for it from First to Faulhorn!
They must have had a lot of fun, because they continued sledding during the night on the illuminated slope of the Eiger run and stopped for a fondue in the neighboring chalet when felt tired and need to warm up a bit.
The last day they took advantage of the winter magic of the Swiss Alps and hiked along the well-maintained winter hiking trail from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen (7 km, 780m descend, 3h). Winter or summer, this is one of my favorite hikes in Switzerland. The spectacular view of the Eiger North Face always takes my breath away.
After a short lunch break the adventure in winter wonderland ended and the group headed towards their next destination.
