All about Bisse!
Discover the history and multiple functions of the bisses!
17 July 2022
If I ask you what the three things are come to your mind about Valais, I am sure you would mention Matterhorn, one of the numerous Alpine resorts like Crans-Montana, Saas Fee or Verbier and wine.
You did`t think about to mention the bisses, the historic irrigation channels that determines the landscape of the canton, did you? 😊
A bisse is an open ditch delivering priceless water from mountain streams – often by daring routes – to arid pastures and fields, vineyards and orchards. Many bisses are still in use today and so are carefully maintained.
During this program we immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of traditional irrigation canals and walk along some of the numerous trails accompanying these historic watercourses.
